We have choices to make, is Disciplined Thought part of your process?

In our personal and professional life we have hundreds of choices to make in a single day. Some have greater impact than others, but all play a role in the shaping of our life and the future of our companies. Few do an excellent job of truly thinking through major decisions, some are pennywise and pound foolish where the small things are scrutinized while the major priority is ignored, and some just float through the day without much thought at all and are purely reacting on impulse. The problem today is this, most people simply don't think, they purely react. There are countless stories in history of people choosing a short term gain that cancels out their long term success because they didn't walk the scenario through before acting. If you knew that by making one seemingly small, impulsive decision would cancel out something great in your future because of the chain reactions it sets in motion, would you still do it? Most of us don't ever take the time to think it through. One of the biggest skills you are missing that will greatly enhance your life is the power of Disciplined Thought.

We are all human and have Urges in life that lead to impulsive Actions, and in this day and age we are plagued by the desire for Instant Gratification. We all want something, and we want it now...but this potentially leads to a major disaster if we don't include Disciplined Thought and actually walk through the potential outcomes that may come from our choices before we make them. A YOU NOT ME™ Mindset helps you proactively make quick decisions when interacting with others so you are always choosing to build and improve upon a relationship, and now we need to go a step further to see how YOU NOT ME is a part of Disciplined Thought and how it will create amazing outcomes while also protecting you from disasters along the way.

I came up with a formula to keep in mind when making decisions. If you change just one symbol in the second part of the equation it provides a completely different outcome. I hope it helps give you pause to add Disciplined Thought to your process.

(UA + IG) - DT = NO

(UA + IG) + DT = GO

(Urges and Actions + Instant Gratification) - Disciplined Thought = NO

or

(Urges and Actions + Instant Gratification) + Disciplined Thought = GO

We all have the first part of the equation to contend with, but not all of us add the second part. If you haven't included Disciplined Thought in the decision making process, it is best to stop and not move forward (NO), regardless of how much you want something and feel if you don't act now you will lose your opportunity. Many of us have regretted decisions after the fact when we reacted impulsively instead of taking a step back to utilize Disciplined Thought to look at the bigger picture and all the facts. Conversely, if you have included Disciplined Thought in the process, you can move forward confidently (GO), knowing that you are making a well thought out decision that has taken into account potential obstacles or pitfalls, how it will affect others (YOU NOT ME™), and if it provides the best outcome for the future.

Do any of you remember the study where a child was left in a room by themselves with a cookie? They were told if they waited to eat the cookie until the adult came back in the room (~10 minutes but they weren't told exactly how long) they would get a second cookie to eat as well. Many didn't possess Disciplined Thought and couldn't resist, they ate the cookie when just waiting a short time and putting off their urges and instant gratification would've doubled their reward.

In your life, are you choosing to eat the cookie, or do you have the Disciplined Thought to wait for an even greater reward?

Thank you so much for reading, it is an honor to have your time! I hope something in this piece resonated with you and helped shift your mindset. If it did, please share it with friends that could benefit from it and would want to join our movement to change the world around you by focusing on YOU NOT ME.

Great stuff Chris! I am a big believer in delayed gratification! I feel this is one of the most important things I have done throughout my career and it has paid off big. I am currently trying to teach to my kids. Very Challenging ! Pray for me!
